AI at work · Reporting judgment

Build Excel reports
you can defend.

The chart looks good. Can you explain where its numbers came from, what the formulas count and whether the conclusion holds?

Practise the checks that turn an AI-assisted workbook into a traceable report and a handover someone else can rerun.

  • Six modules and practical labs
  • About 4–5 hours planned
  • No coding required
  • Copilot is optional

Try the course first

Start with the question behind the number.

Open the real first lesson with Coach Q. Work through fictional reporting records and define which population, time window and denominator the question needs.

Enter your name, work email and phone, then verify your email to open lesson 1. No payment card is required.

Use fictional records for the exercises. You do not need to upload employer data to evaluate the course.

Define the reporting question before asking AI to calculate. Use fictional records and check the metric before deciding.

The workplace problem

A polished workbook can still steer the wrong decision.

The count improved. The rate did not.

Changing volume can reverse the story. Without a matching denominator, a claim of improvement may send the team in the wrong direction.

The refresh ran. A week is still missing.

A pivot can refresh successfully from an incomplete range. A current timestamp cannot replace source coverage and reconciliation.

The chart is clear. The source is not.

Unknowns converted to zero, joins that multiply rows and silent exclusions can make a neat chart misleading.

The author is away. Nobody can rerun it.

Without the source version, rules, steps and expected controls, the next report depends on one person’s memory.

Fictional worked example · adapted from C04

Fewer late orders. Higher late share.

The fictional Larkfield AI summary recommends expanding a scheduling tool because late orders fell. Check the matching exposure before using that claim.

Same late rule. Different order volumes.

Before · 79 late / 1,600 eligible4.94%Four complete weeks
After · 65 late / 800 eligible8.13%Four complete weeks

The late count fell 17.7%, while the late share rose 3.19 percentage points. Order mix and weekly staffing are unknown. These figures do not establish that the tool caused improvement or harm.

Open a defensible finding and next check

Report the count and rate separately, cite the source and disclose the missing context. Ask the actual decision owner to review comparable mix and staffing information before expanding. Reconcile source totals, ranges, filters and chart links first.

This is teaching data, not a customer result or evidence of course effectiveness.

One reporting chain

Define → reconcile → verify → visualize → explain → rerun.

Each module develops part of the same report. You predict a decision, inspect a worked contrast, practise, receive feedback and improve a reusable output.

Learn to challenge the result.

The course teaches reporting judgment and verification. It does not depend on a particular AI button or require an additional Copilot or Python license.

Work in the supplied fictional Excel workbook and use six worksheets. Apply the same checks with an assistant your organization permits, or calculate independently.

Editable example for review. Your edits are not saved or sent.

Who this helps

For the person accountable for the report.

A good fit if you…

  • Prepare, review or explain recurring quality, service or operations reports.
  • Can open and edit an Excel workbook and use basic arithmetic.
  • Need to check AI-generated calculations and conclusions before they inform a decision.
  • Want another person to reproduce the result.

Bring other support when needed.

This course does not teach advanced Excel navigation, coding, specialist statistics, data engineering or regulated report certification. It cannot supply missing source facts, company policy, tool permission or release authority.

Use the actual approved metric, dictionary and correction/release procedure at work. Supplied fictional records allow practice without employer uploads.

Six linked modules

Build the report, then defend it.

MODULE 01

Pin down the question and the number

A director asks whether delivery performance improved. Define late against the promised date at acceptance, one order per record, the relevant period and the eligible population. A chart is premature until those choices are explicit. If the business rule is missing, ask the report owner; do not let an AI choose silently.

Your output: Report question and metric specification.

Five required practical activities and one coached reflection.

MODULE 02

Clean and reconcile the source

A duplicate key may be a repeated export or a legitimate line item. Confirm the unit of record and owner rule before removing it. Preserve the original extract. Record each transformation by ID, reason and outcome. Missing promised date blocks a late classification, but does not erase a valid pick-to-pack duration.

Your output: Source reconciliation and cleaning log.

Five required practical activities and one coached reflection.

MODULE 03

Check formulas, pivots and charts

Ask the AI to explain its formula, ranges, filters and assumptions. Trace a headline to its inputs, recompute from the matching totals, test a boundary and compare with independent source controls. A formula that returns a number can still answer the wrong question. A refreshed PivotTable can still use an incomplete source range.

Your output: Formula, aggregation and refresh verification record.

Five required practical activities and one coached reflection.

MODULE 04

Pick the chart that does not mislead

Use a chronological rate line to compare weekly delivery performance, with volume visible in a companion table. Counts answer workload questions; rates answer share questions. Label units, dates and source. Bar lengths should start at zero. A nonzero line axis can be defensible when disclosed, but must not exaggerate a small change. Missing observations create a gap, not an invented zero.

Your output: Chart specification with an accessible data table.

Five required practical activities and one coached reflection.

MODULE 05

Write the one-line story with its limits

Write a sentence with the measure, matched periods and direction, followed by the key limitation and next decision. Counts fell while the rate rose. That is a reporting finding, not proof that the tool helped or harmed. Do not make a caveat so generic that it hides what evidence would actually change the decision.

Your output: One-line finding, limitations and next decision.

Five required practical activities and one coached reflection.

MODULE 06

Hand over a report someone else can rerun

A colleague needs the source version and cutoff, metric rule, ID mapping and cleaning log, calculation checks, pivot range/filters/refresh steps, expected controls and release owner. Have them rerun a fresh copy. A saved workbook is not evidence that it was refreshed, checked or approved. Record who actually performed each check and the result.

Your output: Rerun instructions, change log and release record.

Five required practical activities and one coached reflection.

Why structured practice helps

The lesson is the decision you make.

Realistic mistakes

Compare strong and weak work. Challenge wrong denominators, unweighted averages, stale pivots, hidden errors and misleading charts.

Practice support

Coach Q, your AI quality and compliance colleague, asks about evidence and helps you revise. You check sources and make the reporting judgment.

Independent transfer

A fresh case and six reasoned decisions require you to build the outputs with different facts. A person reviews the case against the rubric. The final exam tests reporting decisions.

These features create opportunities to practise. Actual learner engagement, completion time and workplace benefit still need a real learner pilot.

Questions before buying

Make the fit clear.

Does this require Copilot?

No. Use an assistant your organization permits or complete independent checks manually. Microsoft features and names can change; verify your current subscription, platform and tenant settings. Python in Excel is optional and cloud-based.

Will I learn Excel buttons?

This is a reporting judgment course, not a comprehensive Excel navigation tutorial. You should be comfortable opening/editing a workbook. The practice file makes calculations and source links inspectable.

Can I upload company records?

Only with permission for the specific data, tool and purpose. Use supplied fictional records when that permission is missing. Never invent a policy or assume a desktop workbook stays local.

Can I try the first lesson?

Yes. Enter your details and verify your email in the free-lesson form. No card is required. Start lesson 1 free.

What if the evidence is incomplete?

A documented hold with a specific missing fact, owner and next check can be a sound result. You are not required to invent a number or approve a report.

Does the course prove my reports are correct?

No. It teaches a repeatable verification method. Your actual source, calculations, procedure and authorized review still determine whether a workplace report can be released.

Source basis and limits

Original practice, bounded product claims.

  • Microsoft Copilot in Excel. Capabilities and availability only. Check current subscription, tenant policy and platform. An authorized assistant or manual checks can be used instead.
  • Python in Excel availability. Optional feature. Availability depends on subscription, platform and update channel. Not required for this course.
  • Python in Excel introduction. Cloud calculation and internet requirement. Do not assume a workbook stays local because Excel is open on a laptop.
  • Refresh PivotTable data. Check actual source, filters, refresh and totals. Do not assume automatic refresh is available or sufficient.
  • Formula relationships. Reference tracing supports inspection; it does not establish the business meaning or completeness of source data.

C04 fictional numeric blocks are reused for worked practice. C13 independent cases are new. No demand statistic, customer testimonial, real learner result or proven time saving is used as buyer evidence.

Your next reporting meeting

Trace the number. Explain the limit.

Bring a report another person can check.

Six practical records, structured feedback and independent application prepare you to improve a permitted reporting workflow. The actual owner still decides what is released.
