Lean Six Sigma path · DMAIC · root cause

Lean Six Sigma for the problem that won't quit. Prove the cause with data. Keep it fixed.

Price a scrap problem, prove its cause with data and hold the gain with DMAIC. Then work the 8D and the root cause tools that stop the repeat corrective action, with Coach Q beside you on your own problems.

For process and quality engineers and improvement leads.

Lesson 1 of Lean Six Sigma Green Belt: The AI Results Leader, a real screen from the course

The AI says our Cpk is 0.80. Can I put that in the report?

COACH Q · IN YOUR POCKET

Not yet. Look at the control chart first. If subgroups sit outside the limits, no capability number describes this process.

Real screen from step 1Lesson 1 is free

Sound familiar?

If you're the one who fixes problems, you've heard these.

Good work. Nobody upstairs noticed.

A fix with no dollar figure stays invisible. In Green Belt you price the problem from scrap tags, rework logs and time sheets, then report net savings finance validated, on a one-page A3 that leads with the money.

Run a Cpk on last month's readings. Put it in the charter.

A caliper that reads in 10 µm steps can't see a 40 µm tolerance, and an unstable process has no capability number yet. Green Belt has you run the gauge study and the control chart before anyone quotes a Cpk.

Retrain the operator. Again.

Three CARs, three operators, the same fix. When the corrective action names a person, the cause is still sitting in the process. Root Cause and CAPA pushes your 5-Why past operator error to something you can change.

It closed. Then it came back.

Recurrence means the corrective action didn't work. Root Cause and CAPA has you set success criteria and a verification window before the fix goes in, and close only when the data says it held.

What it does for you

Become the one they bring the hard problems to.

Numbers nobody has to take on faith

Your cost figure traces to scrap tags and rework logs. Your cause was switched on and off. Your capability number came from a stable process and a gauge that passed its study.

An 8D your customer's reviewer can follow

Containment inside the clock, a D2 anyone can check, and every candidate cause kept or killed with data. That's what the reviewer looks for, and it's what you'll learn to write.

Proof for your next review

Nobody honest can promise a raise. You'll have what that conversation runs on: a problem you priced, a cause you proved and savings finance validated, on a one-page A3.

No course can promise you a raise or a title. What you'll have is the skill, the work to show for it and a certificate anyone can verify. That's what those conversations run on.

Why it matters

BLS projects fast growth for the engineers who improve processes.

12%

Employment of industrial engineers, who collect data on processes and identify ways to improve productivity and quality, is projected to grow 12% from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, Industrial Engineers (2025 to 2035 projections)

Among the duties BLS lists for the job: collect data on the process, analyze it for areas to improve, design the improvement and present it to management. Whatever your title, that's the work this path trains, with a gauge you've checked, a cause you've switched on and off, and savings finance validated.

For the company, it's the problem that won't quit: the same defect every quarter, a new operator's name on each CAR, scrap nobody has priced. Every repeat pays for the sort, the scrap and the premium freight again, until someone proves the cause and builds a control that holds.

The full path

From a priced problem to a fix that stays fixed.

Green Belt comes first for the method and the statistics, from the gauge check to the on/off test, then Root Cause and CAPA takes that rigor to the 8D your customer reads. Improve a Process Before You Automate It puts the same discipline in front of every automation proposal. Each course stands alone.

  1. Step 1 · Prove the cause and the savings

Lean Six Sigma Green Belt: The AI Results Leader

Work DMAIC on a fictional CNC shop's oversize bores: price the scrap, check the gauge, prove the cause on and off, pilot the fix and hold it with a control plan. A Master Black Belt scores your final case study.

You walk out with a chartered problem with a dollar figure, a baseline you can defend, a verified cause, a control plan with an owner, and a one-page A3 that leads with the money.

  2. Step 2 · Stop the repeat corrective action

Root Cause Analysis & CAPA (AS13000)

Work the AS13000 8D from D0 to D8, test every candidate cause against the data, and push past operator error with fishbone, Is/Is-Not and a 5-Why that holds up to an audit. Then build the CAPA system around it.

You walk out with an 8D with a D2 anyone can check, a 5-Why with evidence at every step, effectiveness criteria set before the fix, and a 90-day CAPA plan.

  3. Step 3 · Fix the process before you automate it

Improve a Process Before You Automate It

Follow one request process at a fictional field-service company: map the route people actually follow, split touch time from waiting and rework, test causes against records, decide what to automate and charter a pilot you can reverse. A person reviews your final case study.

You walk out with a current-state map, a time ladder, a future-state map with every human decision marked, a benefits ledger and a pilot charter with a way back.

  4. Step 4 · Read the numbers before anyone decides

Make Better Decisions with Workplace Data

Define a measure, clean the records without hiding anything, compare rates fairly, read a weekly chart with the run chart rules and recommend a step sized to the evidence. A reviewer scores your final case study.

You walk out with a metric card, a cleaning log, a weekly chart spec someone else can build, a six-part decision memo and an AI data review card.

Lessons are built around calls you make: read the record, sort the evidence, catch the mistake. Checks and labs score you on the spot, and your first win comes in the first few minutes of lesson 1.

Stays with you. Stays current.

Coach Q doesn't leave when you finish. It comes with your course, no subscription and no renewal fee, so it's there for the next project, and the next 8D. When the rules behind this course change, we update the lessons and the coach's setup, and we move the coach to newer AI models as we test them.

Questions

Straight answers.

Do I have to take them all?

No. Each course stands on its own, with its own certificate, and lesson 1 is free on each. The path is the order we'd take them in.

What's the difference between DMAIC and an 8D?

An 8D responds to one specific defect. DMAIC improves a process that keeps producing too many defects. Root Cause and CAPA shows where one hands off to the other: a trigger you set, such as three or more 8Ds in one area in a rolling 12 months, starts a DMAIC evaluation.

Do I need statistics software?

No. Green Belt comes with the Green Belt Toolkit, a spreadsheet workbook with the formulas built in: capability, control charts, t-tests, ANOVA, regression, gauge studies and designed experiments. You work the key numbers by hand once, so you know what it's doing.

Do I need a project at work?

No. Green Belt's course case carries you to the certificate. When you have a workplace project, submit it within 12 months and a Master Black Belt reviews it. In Root Cause and CAPA, the exercises put the tools to work on problems from your own floor.

Is this an accredited certification?

No. Each course ends with a QMS Learning certificate anyone can verify at academy.qmslearning.com/verify. On Green Belt it also records your final case study, scored by a Master Black Belt, and your final exam. It isn't an ASQ or IASSC certification; sit their exams later if you want both.

Training a team?

Open any course on the path and pick how many people before you check out. Five or more people get 10% off every seat, applied at checkout. Each person gets their own login, private coach, study plan and certificate. More than 50 people, or need an invoice instead? Email will@qmslearning.com for a quote.

How long do I keep access?

The lessons are yours for life, and Coach Q comes with your course and stays with you after you finish. There's no subscription or renewal fee.

Does the course keep up when the rules change?

Yes, for the edition it teaches. When the rules or guidance behind this course change, we update the lessons and the coach's setup, and you get the update at no extra charge. When a new edition replaces the standard, we point you to the transition training. Your conversations with Coach Q aren't used to train AI models.
